Click here to find out about Mother's Day for Peace 2008
Atlanta WAND is the local chapter of a national organization that seeks to channel women's voices into a powerful movement for change.
WAND was founded as Women's Action for Nuclear Disarmament in 1982 by Helen Caldicott, long-time anti-nuclear activist and founder of Physicians for Social Responsibility. The name was later changed to Women's Action for New Directions as we broadened our mission and sought to connect the dots between excessive military spending and unmet human and environmental needs.
The two issues closest to our hearts are nuclear non-proliferation and re-writing the federal budget from the perspectives of progressive women. To these ends, Atlanta WAND organizes monthly meetings, featuring critical issues, which end with taking action. Welcome to Atlanta WAND!

PLANT VOGTLE OPPOSITION! COMMENTS STILL BEING ACCEPTED

The first step Georgia utilities are taking to try to get federal approval to build new nuclear reactors along the Savannah River is to apply for an “early site permit.” If the permit is issued, concerns such as water, land, public health, and safety cannot be brought up again even if we learn new information. For example, the new reactors will require tens of millions of gallons of water above and beyond the tens of millions Vogtle is already pulling from the Savannah River—this issue cannot be revisited again if the “early site permit” is granted. If approved, this permit essentially allows the Southern Company and its utility partners in Georgia to use the permit at any time for up to 20 years in any future applications with the NRC. Together, Atlanta WAND, Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League, Center for a Sustainable Coast, Savannah Riverkeeper, and Southern Alliance for Clean Energy legally challenged the permit.

Check out Creative Loafing! The Blotter features a write-up of the Atlanta Grandmother's for Peace arrest, but they misquoted one of the Grannies as using the term baby killer! (That's a throw back!!) This information is incorrect. Other than that mistake the account of the arrest was accurate.
